Fundraiser to Fight Cancer…
Court Attendants Becky Sounders and Ashley Bennett decided to celebrate a terrific summer of league play with a fundraiser to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.  The first ever fundraiser at Sand Island was held on Saturday, August 15th.  The day included a round-robin format of play, one-on-one doubles play, retro-play (using wooden racquets), and tennis-pro advice.  Lunch was provided for the participants. Paper tennis balls which were purchased in honor of or in memory of were displayed during the event.  According to the co-chairs, it was a relaxed day which everyone seemed to enjoy.  Donated door prizes that were used for a 50/50 drawing, court sponsors, and entry fees raised $1200 which exceeded their goal of raising $1000 to donate to the American Cancer Society.

4th Annual SMASH for Cancer Tennis Tournament…
The 4th Annual Smash for Cancer Tournament was held the weekend of August 21st-23rd at Northwood Racquet and Fitness Club in Easton.  Over $10,000 has been raised for the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life” programs since the first tournament was held four years ago.  In the past, the tournament memorialized and honored members of the tennis community who lost their battle with cancer, including Nancy Bouis, Helen Zajac and Elaine Shook.  This year the tournament was dedicated to and honored cancer survivors. The event included refreshments throughout the tournament, raffle drawings for items donated by the Northwood staff and community of friends, awards and the traditional Friday evening candle lighting memorial ceremony with illuminated memorial bags surrounding the tennis courts.

Reading Tennis is jamming again….
More than 30 children from the City of Reading Tennis program visited Alvernia University Wednesday, October 7th , for a series of Quickstart matches.  The event took place at the Physical Education Center on campus where they played tennis matches and games against the Crusaders Women's Basketball team as well as members of the Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams. The event was titled “The Reading Tennis Jam”.  For some, it was the first time ever being on a college campus.  The city youth took home the big trophy with a thrilling 199-198 overtime victory.  City Tennis Director, Larry Zerbe, and Crusaders Women’s Basketball coach, Kevin Calabria, who teamed up for a similar event last spring, hoped this event would serve as a kick-off to future volunteerism in city programs.  (more)

Wyoming Seminary Tennis Courts Dedicated and Renamed…
Wyoming Seminary (“Sem”) is a private, college preparatory school located in the Wyoming Valley of Northeastern PA in Kingston and Forty Fort, near the city of Wilkes-Barre.  Wyoming Seminary was founded by Methodist Church leaders in 1844.  At the time, Kingston was a rural village, and the school raised livestock, grew its own produce, and built a smoke house with which to preserve meat for the winter. The school eventually grew and a business school and college prep program was established as a result of the region’s mining and manufacturing ventures.  In 1951, Wyoming Seminary merged with the Wilkes-Barre Day School, becoming the region's only independent school to offer a complete program ranging from nursery through secondary school.

On October 3, 2009 the tennis courts at Wyoming Seminary were dedicated and named after Chuck Lull and Roslyn Rudin, both “Sem” coaching legends and inductees of the Wyoming Seminary Sports Hall of Fame.  Chuck Lull was a three sport athlete at Rutland High School in Vermont, serving as captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams his senior year.  He earned All-State recognition as a quarterback.  At Lehigh University, he played football for the Engineers for four years.  He came to Wyoming Seminary in 1963.  Chuck, first and foremost a math teacher, also served in other capacities including Dean of Students and Chairman of the Math Department. The love, affection and respect that his students had for him in the classroom is legendary.  Initially, Chuck began coaching at “Sem” when he was named the head football coach.  But, in 1965, he became the head tennis coach and remained at that post for 29 years, leading his team to many championships.

Roslyn Rudin graduated from American University and Farleigh Dickinson, having a masters degree in Spanish.  Arriving on campus in 1975, she became a well-respected teacher. She assumed the role as coach of the girl’s tennis program in 1980 when it became a varsity sport at the school.  Never having played competitive tennis in high school or college and only taking up the game seriously after she was married and had two children, Roslyn (Ros) will go down in the annals of Wyoming Seminary coaching with one of the most successful win – loss records in School history.  In the 25 years that she was head coach, culminating with the 2004 season, Ros’ charges had an overall record of 269 -55 and were 254 – 40 during the regular league season.  Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Ros’ tenure as tennis coach is that her teams never had a losing season in 25 years.
